A nation east of the Jordan descended from Lot's younger son Ben-ammi (Genesis 19:36-38), frequently hostile to Israel. Jephthah defeated Ammonite forces oppressing Israel (Judges 10-11), and Ammon's king Hanun's humiliation of David's envoys sparked a war (2 Samuel 10). Ammonite officials like Tobiah later opposed Nehemiah's rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls (Nehemiah 2:19; 4:3).
