About Lives of Scripture

Lives of Scripture is a reference profiling every person named in the Bible — patriarchs, judges, kings, prophets, apostles, and everyone else Scripture names, from Adam to the closing chapters of Revelation. It exists to help worship leaders, Bible teachers, and families answer "who's who" in Scripture, see how everyone connects by genealogy and relationship, and see what each person's story reveals about God's redemptive plan.

This is a sibling site to Lives of Faith, which covers historical Christians from church history onward. Lives of Scripture covers the biblical text itself.

Two kinds of entries

Most of the roughly 3,000 named individuals in Scripture appear in a single genealogy verse with no narrative to tell. This site distinguishes two tiers:

Who's Included — and Who Isn't

This site profiles the human persons Scripture names — so a few deliberate boundaries are worth stating plainly:

Name Spelling

The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is this site's default for how a person's name is spelled. You can also view names as they appear in the King James Version (KJV) — useful because the KJV often spells the same person's name differently in the Old and New Testaments (Elijah/Elias, Isaiah/Esaias, Noah/Noe). No verse text is quoted or stored anywhere on this site, in any translation — references are given as chapter and verse only (e.g. "Genesis 12:1–3"), which you can look up in whatever translation you prefer.

Name-spelling conventions referenced above are taken from the (NASB®) New American Standard Bible®, Copyright © 1960, 1971, 1977, 1995, 2020 by The Lockman Foundation. Used by permission. www.lockman.org. The King James Version (KJV) text is in the public domain in the United States.
