The mountain in the land of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho, where Moses died. Because Moses had not honored God as holy at the waters of Meribah, God told him he would see the promised land but not enter it, and commanded him to climb Mount Nebo in the Abarim range and die there, as Aaron had died on Mount Hor (Deuteronomy 32:48-52). After blessing the tribes, Moses went up Mount Nebo to the top of Pisgah, and the LORD showed him the whole land, from Gilead to Dan and on to the western sea, the land He had promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses died there at 120 years old, his eyesight still clear, and the LORD buried him in a valley in Moab; no one knows the place of his grave (Deuteronomy 34:1-7). Centuries later Moses appeared again, talking with Jesus on the mountain of the transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-3).
