Isaac (M)
First named in Genesis 21:1-7
Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah in their old age, exactly as God had promised, his name ('he laughs') carrying his mother's astonished laughter (Genesis 21:1-7). The defining moment came while still young: God commanded Abraham to offer him as a burnt offering on a mountain in Moriah, and Isaac carried the wood for his own sacrifice, asking only where the lamb was, before God stopped Abraham's hand and provided a substitute ram (Genesis 22:1-14). The New Testament treats this as faith so complete Abraham reasoned God could raise Isaac from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19). Isaac's marriage came through providence: Abraham's servant prayed for a sign at a well, and Rebekah answered it; Isaac loved her, one of the Bible's first statements of a husband's love for his wife (Genesis 24). After twenty years of Rebekah's barrenness, Isaac prayed for her, and she conceived twins, Jacob and Esau, with an oracle that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:19-26). Isaac repeated his father's exact failure in Gerar, telling King Abimelech that Rebekah was his sister out of fear (Genesis 26:6-11). In old age, blind and near death, Isaac set out to bless his favored son Esau against God's earlier oracle; Rebekah and Jacob deceived him into blessing Jacob instead, and Isaac let the blessing stand — an act Hebrews 11:20 still counts as faith, entrusting the future to God's promise. Isaac died at 180, and Jacob and Esau together buried him beside Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 35:27-29).
Thought for Today
Isaac carried the wood up the mountain for his own sacrifice, and God stopped Abraham's hand at the last moment, providing a ram instead. Generations later God gave His own Son as the sacrifice that was not spared, so ours could be.

Rebekah was identified as Isaac's wife through his father's servant's prayer at a well, and Isaac loved her; years later, when Isaac intended to bless his firstborn Esau, Rebekah orchestrated a deception -- dressing Jacob in Esau's clothing so that Isaac, now blind, would bless Jacob instead.

King Abimelech of Gerar discovered that Isaac had deceived him by calling Rebekah his sister when he saw Isaac caressing her, but rather than harm them he issued royal protection over the couple. After later friction between their herdsmen over wells, Abimelech came to Isaac at Beersheba and the two swore a mutual oath of peace, sealed with a shared feast.
