A well and settlement in Canaan's southern edge where Abraham made a covenant with Abimelech and named the site for their oath (Genesis 21:22-34), and where Isaac later dug his own well and renewed the same covenant (Genesis 26:23-33). "From Dan to Beersheba" became a standard phrase for the whole extent of Israel's territory (Judges 20:1). Elijah fled there, exhausted, after fleeing Jezebel's threat (1 Kings 19:3).
