A fortified Canaanite city Joshua conquered during his southern campaign (Joshua 10:31-32), later one of Judah's most important fortress cities. Sennacherib of Assyria besieged and captured Lachish and used it as his base while negotiating (and threatening) with Hezekiah's officials over Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:13-17; 19:8).
