One of the five main Philistine cities and the hometown of Goliath (1 Samuel 17:4). David later fled to Gath's king Achish twice — once feigning madness to escape (1 Samuel 21:10-15), and later living there openly with his men as a vassal to escape Saul (1 Samuel 27:1-4).
