Jezebel (F)

Name means “Chaste” — Hebrew (Phoenician)

First named in 1 Kings 16:31

OT Divided Monarchy

Jezebel, a Phoenician princess, married Ahab, king of Israel, and used her influence to institutionalize Baal worship across the kingdom, supporting 450 prophets of Baal and 400 of Asherah at her own table (1 Kings 16:31; 18:19). She actively hunted down the LORD's prophets, forcing Obadiah to hide a hundred of them in caves to save their lives (18:4, 13). After Elijah's decisive victory over her prophets at Mount Carmel, Jezebel sent a death threat that drove Elijah into the wilderness in despair (19:1-4). Her most notorious act came when Ahab sulked over Naboth's refusal to sell his vineyard: Jezebel arranged false witnesses to accuse Naboth of blasphemy, had him stoned to death, and handed the vineyard to Ahab, prompting Elijah's direct pronouncement that dogs would eat Jezebel's flesh by the wall of Jezreel (21:1-16, 23). Years later, when Jehu came to purge Ahab's dynasty, Jezebel painted her eyes and dressed her hair to face him down defiantly from a window, but Jehu had her thrown down; her body was trampled by horses and eaten by dogs before it could be buried, leaving nothing but her skull, feet, and hands, exactly as Elijah had prophesied (2 Kings 9:30-37). Jezebel's name became lasting biblical shorthand for idolatry, persecution of the faithful, and ruthless abuse of royal power (Revelation 2:20).

Thought for Today

Jezebel arranged false witnesses to have Naboth stoned to death so Ahab could take his vineyard, and Elijah pronounced that dogs would eat her flesh for it -- fulfilled exactly as spoken. Jesus already bore the judgment sin like Jezebel's deserves, so we don't have to face it exposed the way she did.
