Ahab, son of Omri, ruled Israel longer than most kings before him but is remembered as the worst: he married the Phoenician princess Jezebel and, at her influence, built a temple to Baal in Samaria, doing "more to provoke the LORD... than all the kings of Israel who were before him" (1 Kings 16:29-33). The prophet Elijah confronted this directly, declaring a drought and facing down 450 prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel, where fire fell on Elijah's sacrifice and the people cried, "The LORD, He is God" (1 Kings 17-18). Ahab still would not fully repent: when he coveted Naboth's vineyard and Naboth refused to sell his family's inheritance, Jezebel arranged false charges that had Naboth stoned, and Ahab simply took the vineyard (1 Kings 21:1-16). Elijah met him there with judgment — that dogs would lick Ahab's blood as they had Naboth's, and his whole house would be destroyed. When Ahab tore his clothes and humbled himself, God delayed the judgment to his son's reign, a rare mercy toward genuine, if partial, contrition (1 Kings 21:17-29). Ahab did seek God's word through the prophet Micaiah before his final battle, though he imprisoned Micaiah for prophesying defeat, and died from a stray arrow at Ramoth-gilead exactly as Micaiah foretold (1 Kings 22:1-38).
