Naboth owned a vineyard in Jezreel adjacent to King Ahab's palace, and when Ahab offered to buy it or exchange it for a better vineyard, Naboth refused: "the LORD forbid me that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers" (1 Kings 21:1-3) -- a direct appeal to the law's protection of ancestral land within Israel's tribes (compare Leviticus 25:23; Numbers 36:7). Ahab went home and sulked, refusing to eat, until Jezebel took matters into her own hands: she wrote letters in Ahab's name and seal, instructing the elders of Jezreel to proclaim a fast, seat Naboth prominently, and have two worthless men falsely accuse him of cursing God and the king, a capital crime under the law they cynically manipulated (21:4-10). The elders complied, and Naboth was stoned to death on the false charge; Jezebel then told Ahab to go take possession of the vineyard, since Naboth was dead (21:11-16). God did not let the injustice pass unnoticed: He sent Elijah to confront Ahab at the very vineyard, pronouncing that dogs would lick Ahab's blood where they had licked Naboth's, and that judgment would fall on Jezebel and his entire house for the murder (21:17-24). Naboth's death, an innocent man judicially murdered for refusing to surrender his God-given inheritance, stands as one of Scripture's starkest indictments of royal power abused against the powerless.
