In His letter to the church at Thyatira, one of the seven churches of Revelation 2-3, the risen Christ commends the congregation's love, faith, service, and perseverance -- but rebukes them sharply for tolerating "the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess," whose teaching led His servants into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols (Revelation 2:20). The name deliberately recalls the notorious Old Testament queen who promoted Baal worship and persecuted the LORD's prophets (1 Kings 16-21) -- whether this is her actual name or a title Christ applies to her because of that resemblance, Scripture does not say. Christ states that He "gave her time to repent" but she was unwilling (2:21), and pronounces coming judgment: sickness for her, "great tribulation" for those who commit adultery with her unless they repent of her deeds, and death for her children -- so that "all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts" and repays each according to their deeds (2:22-23). Yet Christ also promises that those in Thyatira "who do not hold this teaching" and remain faithful will be given authority and "the morning star" (2:24-28). Jezebel's episode is a sober warning about tolerating false teaching within the church, paired with real hope for those who resist it.
