A Philistine town in Canaan's south where both Abraham and, later, Isaac sojourned during famines and each, in turn, told local king Abimelech his wife was his sister out of fear — deceptions God intervened to expose both times (Genesis 20; 26:1-11). Isaac also dug and redug wells there amid disputes with Gerar's herdsmen (Genesis 26:12-33).
