Life Story
Jesse is introduced in Scripture as the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, the specific point the book of Ruth's closing genealogy is building toward — an otherwise unremarkable Bethlehemite farmer who turns out to matter enormously to the rest of the biblical story (Ruth 4:17-22). When the prophet Samuel came to Bethlehem at God's direction to anoint Israel's next king from among Jesse's sons, Jesse paraded seven of them before Samuel, beginning with the eldest, Eliab, whom Samuel took one look at and assumed must be the one — only for God to correct him: 'man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.' One by one, all seven were rejected (1 Samuel 16:6-10). Jesse had not even thought to call in his youngest son, David, from tending the sheep, apparently not considering him a serious candidate — an omission Scripture records without comment, letting it quietly reinforce the same point God had just made to Samuel (1 Samuel 16:11). Once sent for, David was anointed on the spot, in the middle of his own family, with his brothers looking on (1 Samuel 16:13). Later, Jesse's ordinary parental errands put David at the center of Israel's history again: he sent David to the battle lines with bread and cheese for his brothers and their commander, the very trip during which David encountered Goliath (1 Samuel 17:12-20). Centuries afterward, the prophet Isaiah named Jesse directly in a messianic prophecy — not David, the more celebrated king, but Jesse, the obscure farmer: 'a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse... in that day the nations will resort to the root of Jesse' — a name chosen, it seems, precisely because of Jesse's ordinariness, underscoring that the coming King would arise from God's own choice rather than human greatness (Isaiah 11:1, 10). The New Testament applies this prophecy directly to Christ (Romans 15:12).
Family
Jesse was the grandson of Boaz and Ruth and the father of eight sons, of whom David — the youngest, sent for last, tending sheep while his brothers stood before the prophet — was the one Scripture singles out with the reminder that 'the LORD looks at the heart' (1 Samuel 16:1-13; 1 Samuel 17:12). Jesse also had at least two daughters, Zeruiah and Abigail, whose sons Joab, Abishai, Asahel, and Amasa became prominent military commanders under David — meaning several of David's most important generals were, in fact, his own nephews (1 Chronicles 2:13-17).
