The ridge just east of Jerusalem, across the Kidron Valley, about a Sabbath day's walk from the city (Acts 1:12). David climbed it weeping and barefoot as he fled Absalom's revolt, and at its summit met Hushai and then Ziba (2 Samuel 15:30-16:4). Solomon built high places for foreign gods on the mountain east of Jerusalem, which Josiah later defiled (1 Kings 11:7; 2 Kings 23:13). Zechariah prophesied a day when the LORD's feet will stand on this mountain and it will split in two (Zechariah 14:4). In the Gospels, Jesus began His entry into Jerusalem from here, wept over the city as He came down, spent His nights on the mount during His last week, taught His disciples here about the temple's destruction and His return, and went here to pray after the Last Supper, in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 19:29-44; 21:37; Mark 13:3; Matthew 26:30-36). After His ascension, angels told the apostles that Jesus would come back in the same way they had seen Him go, and they returned to Jerusalem from Olivet (Acts 1:9-12); many readers connect this with Zechariah's prophecy.
