Ahaziah became king of Judah after his father Jehoram's death, and Scripture is blunt about why he "walked in the way of the house of Ahab": his mother was Athaliah, granddaughter of Omri, who counseled him toward the same evil that had marked Ahab's dynasty in Israel (2 Kings 8:26-27). Ahaziah allied with his uncle Joram, king of Israel, to fight Hazael of Aram at Ramoth-gilead, where Joram was wounded and withdrew to Jezreel to recover; Ahaziah went down to visit him there (8:28-29). At that moment, Elisha's prophetic word came to pass: Jehu was anointed king of Israel and commissioned to wipe out Ahab's entire house as judgment for Jezebel's and Ahab's bloodshed (9:1-10). When Jehu struck down Joram, Ahaziah fled, but Jehu's men pursued and mortally wounded him near Ibleam; he managed to reach Megiddo before he died, and his servants carried his body to Jerusalem for burial (9:27-28). A parallel account in 2 Chronicles 22:7-9 adds that Ahaziah was found hiding in Samaria and was brought before Jehu to be put to death. Ahaziah's one-year reign shows Scripture's consistent verdict: alliance with evil, even by family ties, carries real and often fatal consequences.
