Phinehas, younger son of Eli the priest at Shiloh, served alongside his brother Hophni, but Scripture bluntly calls them 'worthless men' who 'did not know the LORD' (1 Samuel 2:12). They took meat from worshipers' sacrifices by force before it was properly offered, treating the LORD's offering 'with contempt,' and Phinehas is separately implicated, with his brother, in sexual immorality with the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting (2:13-17, 22). Eli rebuked them, but they ignored him, and an unnamed man of God warned Eli that both his sons would die on the same day as a sign of coming judgment on his house (2:27-34). That judgment fell when Israel, losing a battle against the Philistines, brought the ark of the covenant into camp as a talisman for victory; instead, Israel was routed, the ark was captured, and Hophni and Phinehas both died in the defeat (4:3-11). Phinehas's pregnant wife, hearing the news of the ark's capture and her husband's and father-in-law's deaths, went into labor and died giving birth, naming her son Ichabod -- 'the glory has departed' -- because the ark, the visible sign of God's presence, was gone from Israel (4:19-22). Phinehas's account is a sobering warning that holding a priestly office does not itself guarantee reverence for God, and no religious symbol can substitute for genuine covenant faithfulness.
