Ichabod's birth is bound up with one of the darkest days in Israel's early history. His father Phinehas and his uncle Hophni, corrupt priests who abused their office (1 Samuel 2:12-17, 22), carried the ark of the covenant into battle against the Philistines as a talisman rather than in genuine faith; both were killed and the ark itself was captured (4:10-11). When the news reached Shiloh, Eli -- Phinehas's father, Israel's aged priest and judge -- fell backward off his seat and died on hearing that the ark was taken (4:17-18). At that same moment, Phinehas's wife, far along in pregnancy, went into labor from the shock. As she was dying, the women attending her tried to comfort her: "Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son." But she did not answer or pay attention. She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel," because of the capture of the ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and husband -- then repeated it once more before she died: "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken" (4:19-22). Ichabod himself never speaks or acts again in Scripture; his name alone stands as a permanent, grieving verdict on a corrupt priesthood and a nation that had begun to treat God's presence carelessly.
