Nadab, Aaron's firstborn son, was set apart along with his father and three brothers as one of Israel's first ordained priests at Sinai, and was among the seventy-four elders and leaders privileged to go up the mountain and 'see the God of Israel' before the covenant meal (Exodus 24:1, 9-11; 28:1). This high honor makes what followed at the tabernacle's dedication especially severe: Nadab and his brother Abihu each took his own censer, put fire and incense in it, and 'offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them' (Leviticus 10:1). Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died there before the LORD (10:2). Moses explained the judgment to a stunned Aaron by quoting God's own words: 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, and before all the people I will be honored' (10:3) -- the newly consecrated priesthood was held to the highest standard precisely because of its nearness to God's presence. Aaron, forbidden even to mourn openly for his sons in the moment given the priesthood's ongoing duties, remained silent (10:3, 6-7). Nadab died without children, and the priesthood passed instead through his younger brothers Eleazar and Ithamar (Numbers 3:2-4; 26:60-61). His death remains one of Scripture's starkest warnings that access to worship God is a gift with real boundaries, not a license for self-styled devotion.
