Levi was Jacob and Leah's third son (Genesis 29:34), born into a family already strained by rivalry between Leah and Rachel. His defining act comes in Genesis 34: after their sister Dinah was raped by Shechem, son of Hamor, Levi and his brother Simeon responded not with negotiation but deception and slaughter. They agreed to let Shechem's men be circumcised as a condition of peace, then, "while they were in pain," attacked the city, killed every male, and plundered it (34:25-29) -- an act Jacob condemned even as it happened: "You have brought trouble on me... my men being few in number, they will gather together against me and attack me" (34:30). Levi's violence was not forgotten. In Jacob's dying blessing, Levi and Simeon are grouped together and rebuked, not praised: "their swords are implements of violence... cursed be their anger, for it is fierce... I will disperse them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel" (49:5-7) -- a judgment later transformed into vocation, as the tribe of Levi was given no territorial inheritance but was scattered among Israel's other tribes to serve at the tabernacle (Numbers 18; Joshua 21). Levi himself did not live to see it, but his descendants -- through Moses, Aaron, and generations of priests -- became the tribe entrusted with Israel's worship, an outcome Scripture never credits to Levi's own character, only to God's ongoing purpose despite it.
