Azariah was one of six sons of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, named alongside his brothers Jehiel, Zechariah, Azaryahu, Michael, and Shephatiah (2 Chronicles 21:2). Jehoshaphat, wanting to provide for all his sons, gave each of them substantial gifts of silver, gold, and valuables, along with fortified cities in Judah -- but he gave the kingdom itself to Jehoram, his firstborn (21:3). When Jehoshaphat died and Jehoram took the throne, Jehoram moved quickly to secure his position: "he killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the rulers of Israel also" (21:4). Azariah, along with his brothers, was murdered by his own sibling -- an act of naked political self-preservation with no attempt at justification recorded in the text. The Chronicler does not soften this; it is reported as bluntly as Jehoram's subsequent unfaithfulness (idolatry, marriage to Ahab's daughter Athaliah, and eventual divine judgment through illness, 21:6-19). Azariah's death stands as part of Scripture's unflinching record that the royal line through which God's covenant promises ran was not spared its own violence and sin -- family loyalty gave way to raw ambition even among the sons of a genuinely faithful king.
