Azaryahu was one of six sons of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, listed alongside his brothers Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Michael, and Shephatiah -- his name a slightly longer form of his brother Azariah's, both meaning "the LORD has helped" (2 Chronicles 21:2). Jehoshaphat gave each of his sons generous gifts of silver, gold, and valuable things, together with fortified cities throughout Judah, but reserved the throne itself for Jehoram, his firstborn (21:3). After Jehoshaphat's death, Jehoram consolidated his new reign by violence: "he killed all his brothers with the sword, and some of the rulers of Israel also" (21:4). Azaryahu was among those murdered by his own brother, simply for being a potential rival claimant to the throne -- Scripture records no crime on his part, only that he was a son of Jehoshaphat and therefore a threat to Jehoram's grip on power. The Chronicler tells this without excuse or embellishment, immediately followed by an account of Jehoram's further unfaithfulness -- idolatry, a ruinous alliance through his wife Athaliah, and eventual divine judgment (21:6-19). Azaryahu's brief, grim entry in Judah's royal history is a sober reminder that even within the covenant line carrying God's promises, sin and violence went unchecked at the highest levels.
