Ahimelech served as priest at Nob when David, fleeing Saul, arrived alone and asked for provisions, telling Ahimelech he was on a secret royal errand (1 Samuel 21:1-2) -- a lie that put Ahimelech in danger without his knowledge. Having no ordinary bread available, Ahimelech gave David the consecrated showbread, and also handed over the sword of Goliath, which had been kept wrapped behind the ephod since David's earlier victory (21:6, 9). Doeg the Edomite, Saul's chief herdsman, witnessed the exchange and later reported it to Saul, who was already hunting for any excuse to strike at David's supporters (22:9-10). Saul summoned Ahimelech and all the priests of Nob and accused them of conspiracy. Ahimelech answered honestly and courageously: he had no idea David was a fugitive, and no servant of Saul's was more faithful than David (22:14-15). Saul, unmoved, ordered his guards to execute the priests; when they refused to raise a hand against the LORD's priests, Saul commanded Doeg, who alone killed all eighty-five priests wearing the linen ephod, then put the entire town of Nob to the sword -- men, women, children, infants, and livestock (22:17-19). Only Ahimelech's son Abiathar escaped to tell David what had happened. David, recognizing his own lie had set the massacre in motion, confessed his responsibility plainly: "I have brought about the death of every person in your father's household" (22:22). Ahimelech's death stands as one of Scripture's starkest pictures of an innocent man destroyed by a tyrant's paranoia.
