On, son of Peleth, a Reubenite, is named once in Scripture, at the opening of one of the wilderness generation's most serious rebellions: "Now Korah... with Dathan and Abiram... and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took action, and they rose up before Moses" (Numbers 16:1-2). The rebellion combined two grievances -- Korah, a Levite, resented that only Aaron's line held the priesthood, while Dathan, Abiram, and On, from Reuben, may have resented losing their tribe's traditional firstborn standing to Moses and Aaron's leadership. Together with 250 leaders of the congregation, they confronted Moses: "You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them... so why do you exalt yourselves?" (16:3). What follows is remembered as one of Scripture's starkest judgments -- the ground opened and swallowed Korah, Dathan, and Abiram with their households, and fire consumed the 250 leaders (16:31-35). Strikingly, On is never mentioned again in the account of the judgment or afterward -- Scripture simply does not say what became of him. Later Jewish tradition holds that On's wife persuaded him to withdraw from the conspiracy before the end, sparing his life, but this is not stated in the biblical text itself and should be read as later tradition, not confirmed fact.
