Judah, Jacob's fourth son by Leah, proposed selling Joseph to Ishmaelite traders rather than killing him outright (Genesis 37:26-27) -- self-interested, but it spared Joseph's life. He then married a Canaanite wife, and after his sons Er and Onan died under God's judgment, failed to give his daughter-in-law Tamar to his third son as promised. Tamar disguised herself and conceived by Judah himself; when he threatened to have her burned for apparent immorality, she revealed he was the father, and Judah admitted, "she is more righteous than I" (Genesis 38:1-26) -- a rare moment of self-indicting honesty. Years later in Egypt, facing the unknowing Joseph's demand to keep Benjamin as a slave, Judah offered himself in Benjamin's place rather than let their father Jacob lose another beloved son, a striking reversal of the man who once sold his own brother (44:18-34). Jacob's deathbed blessing gave Judah preeminence among the tribes: "the scepter shall not depart from Judah... until Shiloh comes" (49:8-10), and the tribe of Judah became Israel's leading tribe, providing its kings from David onward. Judah's arc -- from selling a brother into slavery to offering himself for one -- models repentance's real shape: not merely regret, but changed action when the same kind of test comes again.
