This Jeshua, son of Kadmiel, was one of the Levites active in Jerusalem during Ezra and Nehemiah's post-exilic reforms. When Ezra assembled the returned community and read publicly from the Law of Moses, Jeshua was named among thirteen Levites -- including Bani, Sherebiah, and others -- who "helped the people to understand the Law while the people remained in their place," reading from the book and "translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading" (Nehemiah 8:7-8). This was substantive teaching work, not mere ceremony: making sure a generation partly unfamiliar with the covenant actually grasped what was being read to them. Soon after, on a day set apart for fasting and confession, Jeshua appears again among the Levites who stood on the stairs and "cried with a loud voice to the LORD their God," leading the assembly in worship with the words, "Stand up, bless the LORD your God forever and ever!" before leading them into a long prayer of confession recounting Israel's history of rebellion and God's persistent faithfulness (Nehemiah 9:4-5). Jeshua's role across both scenes is the same: helping God's people actually understand and respond to His Word, at a pivotal moment when the returned exiles were recommitting themselves to the covenant their ancestors had broken.
