Gideon was found threshing wheat secretly in a winepress, hiding from Midianite raiders, when the angel of the LORD greeted him as 'a valiant warrior' (Judges 6:11-12) -- language sharply at odds with Gideon's own self-description as the least in the weakest clan of Manasseh (6:15). Gideon asked for repeated confirmation: first a sign of fire consuming an offering (6:17-21), then twice testing God with a wool fleece, once wet with dry ground around it, once dry with wet ground around it -- and God patiently granted both requests (6:36-40). Called to fight Midian, Gideon first tore down his own father's altar to Baal by night, out of fear of the townspeople (6:25-27). God then deliberately shrank his army from 32,000 to just 300 men, 'so that Israel may not boast... saying, My own hand has saved me' (7:2-7), and that remnant routed the vast Midianite camp using only torches, empty jars, and trumpets, trusting God rather than weapons for the actual assault (7:16-22). Gideon pursued and captured Midian's kings, executing them, and violently punished two Israelite towns that had refused to aid his exhausted men (8:4-17). Offered kingship afterward, Gideon refused, saying 'the LORD shall rule over you' (8:22-23) -- yet he then made a golden ephod from the plunder that 'became a snare' as Israel worshiped it, undoing much of his own legacy (8:24-27). Hebrews 11:32 nonetheless lists Gideon among the heroes of faith, a flawed but genuine deliverer.
