After Gideon's small army routed the Midianites and captured their two kings, Zebah and Zalmunna, at Karkor, Gideon brought the captives back and told his firstborn son, Jether, "Rise, kill them." Scripture does not hide what happened next: "the youth did not draw his sword, for he was afraid, because he was still a youth" (Judges 8:20). Zebah and Zalmunna, watching, told Gideon plainly, "Rise up yourself and kill us; for as the man is, so is his strength" -- an implicit judgment that only a grown warrior's hand was fit for the task. Gideon then killed them himself, along with taking the crescent ornaments from their camels' necks (8:21). Jether's single appearance is a small, honest detail inside a much larger account of his father's victory -- Scripture does not smooth over the fact that a young man froze in a moment meant to prove his readiness. Unlike so many other biblical "firstborn son" notices that carry only a name, Jether's brief scene captures a real, relatable human moment: the gap between what a father hopes his son is ready for, and what fear actually allows in the moment itself.
