Ethan the Ezrahite appears by name in a single verse describing Solomon's legendary wisdom: "Solomon's wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the sons of the east and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men, than Ethan the Ezrahite, Heman, Calcol and Darda" (1 Kings 4:30-31). Being used as the benchmark against which Solomon's greater wisdom is measured marks Ethan as one of the most celebrated sages of his day, even if no specific saying or deed of his survives in the historical narrative. He is listed among the sons of Zerah in the genealogy of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:6, alongside Heman, Calcol, and Dara -- likely the same men named in 1 Kings 4:31). Psalm 89 carries the superscription "A Maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite," and is traditionally attributed to this same wise man; the psalm itself is a sweeping meditation on God's covenant faithfulness to David's line, God's unmatched power over creation, and an anguished appeal to God in a time when that covenant seemed threatened. If the attribution is correct, Ethan's legacy moves beyond a mere name on a wisdom list to a substantial theological composition wrestling honestly with the tension between God's promises and present hardship.
