Cozbi was a Midianite woman, daughter of Zur, a tribal head of a Midianite family (Numbers 25:15, 18). She appears at the climax of Israel's apostasy at Baal of Peor, where Israelite men had begun sexually engaging with Moabite and Midianite women and joining in sacrifices to their gods, provoking the LORD's anger and a deadly plague among the people (25:1-9). In open defiance, as Moses and the congregation wept at the tent of meeting, Zimri, a leader of a Simeonite family, brought Cozbi into the camp and into his tent in full view of the assembly (25:6, 14). Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, took a spear, followed them into the tent, and killed them both with a single thrust, an act of zealous judgment that the LORD credited with turning back His wrath and halting the plague, which had already killed 24,000 (25:7-9, 14-18). The LORD later commanded Moses to treat the Midianites as hostile because of this incident, specifically citing "the affair of Peor, and in the affair of Cozbi" (25:16-18). Cozbi's brief, tragic appearance marks one of the most severe judgment scenes in the wilderness narrative, a sobering reminder of how seriously God regards His people's covenant faithfulness and how costly compromise with idolatry proved to be.
