A wilderness oasis that served as Israel's main base during much of the forty years of wandering. The twelve spies returned there with their report of Canaan (Numbers 13:26), and it was at Kadesh that Moses, in frustration, struck the rock instead of speaking to it as commanded — an act of disobedience that cost him entry into the promised land (Numbers 20:1-13).
