Reuben (M)

Name means “Who sees the son; the vision of the son” — Hebrew

First named in Genesis 29:32

OT Patriarchal

Reuben was Jacob's firstborn son by Leah (Genesis 29:32), and as firstborn should have received the leadership and double inheritance due the eldest. He forfeited that standing decisively: Scripture records plainly that he slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine (Genesis 35:22), an act Jacob later condemned on his deathbed as an unstable, dishonorable violation of his father's bed that cost him preeminence among his brothers -- "you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father's bed" (Genesis 49:3-4). Yet Reuben is not portrayed as simply villainous. When his brothers, jealous of Joseph, plotted to kill him, Reuben proposed throwing him into a pit instead, intending secretly to rescue him and return him to Jacob (Genesis 37:21-22) -- a plan foiled when Judah sold Joseph to traders while Reuben was away. In genuine anguish over Joseph's presumed death, Reuben cried, "The boy is not there... where am I to go?" (37:29-30), and when the brothers later needed to bring Benjamin to Egypt, Reuben pledged his own two sons' lives as surety for Benjamin's safe return (42:37). Reuben's descendants settled east of the Jordan (Numbers 32), and Moses' blessing prayed simply that the tribe would "live and not die out" (Deuteronomy 33:6) -- a muted note matching Jacob's judgment. Reuben's story is one of squandered privilege alongside real, if imperfect, loyalty.

Thought for Today

Reuben lost his birthright through serious sin, yet still risked his father's anger trying to save Joseph's life. Jesus can use even people who've failed badly for good.
