Nathanael is introduced in John's Gospel through his friend Philip, who found him and announced, 'We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote -- Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph' (John 1:45). Nathanael responded with skepticism rooted in Nazareth's obscurity and poor reputation: 'Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?' (1:46). Philip did not argue but simply said, 'Come and see.' When Nathanael approached, Jesus described him before any introduction: 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!' (1:47). Startled, Nathanael asked how Jesus knew him, and Jesus answered, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you' (1:48) -- an apparently supernatural knowledge of a private moment that immediately convinced Nathanael. He responded with one of the most direct confessions of Jesus's identity in the Gospels: 'Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel' (1:49). Jesus told him he would see even greater things -- 'heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man' (1:51), an allusion to Jacob's ladder in Genesis 28. Nathanael is listed among the Twelve in the Synoptic Gospels under the name Bartholomew, always paired near Philip in the apostle lists (Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18; Luke 6:14), which along with John's silence on 'Bartholomew' and the Synoptics' silence on 'Nathanael' has led most interpreters to identify the two as the same man -- though Scripture never states this explicitly. He reappears by name among the disciples who saw the risen Jesus at the Sea of Galilee (John 21:2) and among the apostles gathered after the ascension (Acts 1:13).
