A small, unremarkable Galilean town — Nathanael's skeptical "can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" (John 1:46) reflects its reputation — where the angel Gabriel announced Jesus's birth to Mary (Luke 1:26-38) and where Jesus grew up after His family's return from Egypt (Matthew 2:23; Luke 2:39-40). When Jesus later preached there and identified Himself as the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, His own townspeople tried to throw Him off a cliff (Luke 4:16-30).
