Hiram, king of Tyre, first appears as an ally sending cedar timber, carpenters, and stonemasons to build David's palace in Jerusalem, part of a friendship the text notes Hiram 'always loved David' (2 Samuel 5:11; 1 Kings 5:1). When Solomon succeeded David and began preparing to build the temple, Hiram, hearing of his intentions, sent envoys, and Solomon requested the same skilled timber and craftsmanship, explicitly noting that Tyre's workmen were more skilled at cutting timber than Israel's (1 Kings 5:2-6). Hiram responded with evident joy, blessing the LORD for giving David a wise son, and the two kings formalized a substantial trade agreement: Hiram supplied cedar and cypress logs rafted down the coast, along with craftsmen, in exchange for enormous annual shipments of wheat and pure oil to sustain Hiram's household (5:7-11; 2 Chronicles 2:3-16). Hiram also sent his own skilled craftsman, also named Hiram, to cast the temple's bronze furnishings (1 Kings 7:13-14). Once the temple and Solomon's palace were both complete, Solomon in turn gave Hiram twenty cities in the region of Galilee, though Hiram was reportedly displeased with their quality, naming the region Cabul (9:10-13). The two kings' fleets also cooperated on trading voyages to Ophir for gold (9:26-28; 10:11). Hiram's long, mutually beneficial partnership with both David and Solomon shows a foreign king's skill and resources directly enabling the construction of Israel's central place of worship.
