Hilkiah served as high priest during King Josiah's reign, and his defining moment came during temple repairs Josiah had ordered: while distributing funds to the workers, Hilkiah discovered "the Book of the Law" in the temple, apparently forgotten or neglected for years (2 Kings 22:3-8). He gave it to Shaphan the royal secretary, who read it to Josiah; the king was so shaken by how far Judah had strayed from its contents that he tore his clothes in grief and sent Hilkiah and other officials to consult the prophetess Huldah, who confirmed the coming judgment but promised Josiah himself would not see it in his lifetime because of his humble response (2 Kings 22:9-20). Hilkiah then helped lead Josiah's sweeping reforms, removing idols and pagan altars throughout Judah, and stood alongside the king during the public covenant renewal and the great Passover celebration that followed (2 Kings 23:1-23). Hilkiah's discovery of the Law is treated in Scripture as a genuinely pivotal moment, showing how a forgotten word of God, once rediscovered and taken seriously, could still reshape an entire nation's direction even generations after it had been set aside.
