Gad was Jacob's seventh son, born to Zilpah, the maidservant Leah had given to Jacob after her own childbearing paused (Genesis 30:9-11). At his birth, Leah exclaimed, "How fortunate!" and named him Gad accordingly (30:11). Beyond his birth, Scripture records no independent narrative episode involving Gad personally, but he receives, along with his eleven brothers, an individual prophetic blessing from the dying Jacob in Genesis 49: "As for Gad, raiders will raid him, but he will raid at their heels" (49:19) -- a brief but pointed word anticipating the tribe's later history as a border people frequently subject to raids yet capable of decisive counterattack. The tribe of Gad that descended from him settled, at its own request, in fertile grazing land east of the Jordan (Numbers 32:1-34), and its warriors are later described in 1 Chronicles 12:8 as fierce, swift fighters "whose faces were like the faces of lions." The tribe of Gad is also named among the twelve tribes sealed in Revelation's vision of God's redeemed people (Revelation 7:5). While Gad himself performs no recorded action beyond fathering seven sons (46:16), his name and his father's blessing shaped the identity and destiny of an entire tribe of Israel for the rest of the Old Testament.
