Apollos, a Jew from Alexandria, is introduced as "an eloquent man, who was mighty in the Scriptures," instructed in the way of the Lord and speaking boldly in the synagogue at Ephesus, "being fervent in spirit" -- yet knowing "only the baptism of John," an incomplete grasp of the gospel that predated the full picture of Jesus's death, resurrection, and the gift of the Spirit (Acts 18:24-25). Priscilla and Aquila heard him and took him aside privately to explain "the way of God more accurately," and Apollos received their correction without recorded resistance or wounded pride (18:26). He then traveled to Achaia, where believers wrote letters commending him, and "greatly helped those who had believed through grace," powerfully refuting Jewish opponents in public debate by demonstrating from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ (18:27-28). His effective ministry in Corinth, however, led to an unhealthy factionalism Paul later had to confront directly: some Corinthian believers began identifying themselves as "of Apollos" against others who claimed to be "of Paul," turning gifted teachers into rival camps (1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:4-6). Paul's response reframed both men correctly: "I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth... he who plants and he who waters are one" (3:6-8) -- teaching that ministry gifts, however impressive, exist to serve the same Lord rather than to build competing loyalties. Paul later mentions urging Apollos to visit Corinth again, suggesting the two remained on good personal terms despite the factions built in their names (16:12).
