An early capital of the northern kingdom of Israel before Omri built Samaria, serving as the royal seat under kings including Baasha, Elah, and Zimri. Zimri's seven-day reign ended when he burned the palace down over himself there rather than face Omri's siege (1 Kings 16:8-18), after which Omri eventually relocated the capital to Samaria.
