A Roman colony in Macedonia and the first place in Europe where Paul preached, following a vision calling him there (Acts 16:9-12). Lydia was converted and hosted the missionaries; Paul and Silas were later imprisoned and miraculously freed after an earthquake, leading to the jailer's conversion (Acts 16:13-40). Paul's warm letter to the Philippians was written to the church founded there.
