A place east of the Jordan where Jacob, returning to Canaan, was met by angels and named the site "two camps" (Genesis 32:1-2). It later became Ish-bosheth's capital when Abner made him king over Israel against David (2 Samuel 2:8-9), and still later the refuge David fled to during Absalom's rebellion, where he received support from Machir and Barzillai (2 Samuel 17:24-27).
