The Roman-era name for the southern portion of the former kingdom of Judah, including Jerusalem, governed at different times by Herod the Great, his son Archelaus, and Roman prefects including Pontius Pilate (Matthew 2:1; Luke 3:1). Jesus's public ministry moved between Judea and Galilee, and it was in Judea's wilderness that John the Baptist preached (Matthew 3:1).
