A Benjaminite town whose men's horrific crime against a Levite's concubine triggered a civil war that nearly wiped out the tribe of Benjamin (Judges 19-20). It later became the hometown and capital of Israel's first king, Saul, whose family — including Jonathan and Michal — is repeatedly identified with the place (1 Samuel 10:26; 11:4).
