Garden of Eden

Also called: Eden
First named: Genesis 2:8
Region Mesopotamia Primeval History
Disputed identification: Genesis 2:10-14 names four rivers, two of which (Tigris and Euphrates) are known today, suggesting a location in or near Mesopotamia — but the other two rivers cannot be securely identified, and no modern site is confidently proposed. Treated here as the location Scripture describes, not a claim about a discoverable spot on today's map.

The garden God planted and placed the first man in, containing the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:8-17). Adam and Eve lived there until their disobedience led to their expulsion, with cherubim and a flaming sword set to guard the way back (Genesis 3).
