Simeon (M)

Name means “That hears or obeys; that is heard” — Hebrew

First named in Genesis 29:33

OT Patriarchal

Simeon was Jacob and Leah's second son, whose name Leah connected to God hearing that she was unloved (Genesis 29:33). His defining act comes in Genesis 34: after their sister Dinah was violated by Shechem, Simeon and his brother Levi deceived the men of the city into circumcision under the pretense of a marriage agreement, then while the men were incapacitated, killed every male and plundered the city -- an act of calculated, disproportionate vengeance that appalled their father (Genesis 34:25-30). Jacob never forgot it: on his deathbed he pronounced not a blessing but a curse over Simeon and Levi together, condemning their anger as fierce and cruel and declaring he would scatter their descendants in Israel (Genesis 49:5-7) -- a judgment fulfilled in that Simeon's tribe received no separate territorial inheritance, only towns within Judah's allotment (Joshua 19:1-9). Simeon reappears later when his brothers travel to Egypt during the famine: Joseph, not yet revealing his identity, holds Simeon back as a hostage to guarantee the brothers return with Benjamin (Genesis 42:24, 36). Simeon's story does not flatter him -- Scripture records his violence plainly, without excuse -- yet he remains counted among the twelve tribal patriarchs through whom God carried forward His covenant promises regardless of his sons' sin.

Thought for Today

Simeon's violent revenge earned Jacob's curse instead of blessing, yet he still became a tribal patriarch. God's covenant rests on His promise, not our worthiness, fulfilled in Jesus.
