Sibbecai the Hushathite, also called Mebunnai, was one of David's mighty men, remembered for a specific act of battlefield courage. During a war against the Philistines at Gob, "Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was among the descendants of the giant" -- one of several Philistine warriors of unusual size defeated by David's men in that campaign (2 Samuel 21:18; 1 Chronicles 20:4). He appears in the roster of David's Thirty mighty warriors (2 Samuel 23:27; 1 Chronicles 11:29), and later held a formal command: 1 Chronicles 27:11 lists him as commander of the division of 24,000 troops on duty during the eighth month of David's organized rotation of the army. Sibbecai is not given extended narrative beyond these notices, but together they sketch a consistent picture -- a battle-tested warrior whose individual feat against a giant-descended Philistine earned him a lasting place in Israel's collective memory of David's elite fighting men, and whose reliability was rewarded with ongoing command responsibility in the king's standing forces. Like several of David's mighty men, Sibbecai's single recorded act of valor stands in for a career of loyal service that Scripture otherwise summarizes only in lists.
