Othniel (M)
First named in Joshua 15:17
Othniel, son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz, first appears when Caleb offers his daughter Achsah in marriage to whoever captures Kiriath-sepher; Othniel takes the city and wins her hand (Joshua 15:16-17; Judges 1:12-13). After Joshua's generation died, Israel "did evil in the sight of the LORD" by worshiping Baals and Asheroth, and God gave them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Aram-naharaim, for eight years (Judges 3:7-8). When Israel cried out, "the Spirit of the LORD came upon" Othniel; he judged Israel, went to war, and God gave Cushan-rishathaim into his hand, and the land had rest for forty years (3:9-11). Othniel's brief account establishes the pattern the whole book of Judges repeats: Israel's sin, oppression, cry for help, a Spirit-empowered deliverer, and rest -- a cycle that exposes the nation's repeated unfaithfulness even as it displays God's repeated mercy. As the first and most straightforwardly faithful of the judges, with no moral failure recorded of him, Othniel stands as a picture of the kind of Spirit-raised deliverer Israel would need again and again until a final judge and king came who would not fail.
Thought for Today
When Israel cried out under Cushan-rishathaim's oppression, 'the Spirit of the LORD came upon' Othniel, and he delivered them without a single moral failure recorded of him in the text. Jesus is the deliverer that pattern was always pointing toward, the one judge who never needed his own story corrected.
