Japheth was one of Noah's three sons, born before the flood (Genesis 5:32), and one of the eight people God preserved aboard the ark through the waters that destroyed the rest of humanity (Genesis 7:13). After the flood, Noah planted a vineyard, made wine, and became drunk, lying uncovered in his tent -- his youngest son Ham saw his father's nakedness and told his brothers, but Shem and Japheth "took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father's nakedness" (Genesis 9:20-23). For this act of honor, Noah's later oracle blessed Japheth: "God will enlarge Japheth, and he will dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant" (9:27) -- a blessing tying Japheth's future to Shem's rather than to the descendants of Ham's son Canaan, whom Noah cursed for the same episode. Genesis 10's Table of Nations lists seven sons of Japheth -- Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras -- as ancestors of nations spreading north and west of the ancient Near East, commonly associated with peoples of Asia Minor, the Aegean, and beyond, tracing how humanity repopulated the earth after the flood through Noah's three sons.
