Jaazaniah, son of Jeremiah (a different man from the prophet) and grandson of Habazziniah, was the head of the Rechabite family in Jeremiah's day (Jeremiah 35:3). At the LORD's instruction, the prophet Jeremiah brought Jaazaniah and his entire household into a chamber of the temple and set wine before them, inviting them to drink (35:2-5). Jaazaniah and his kinsmen refused: "We will not drink wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us... you shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard... but you shall live in tents all your days'" -- and they explained they had kept that command faithfully for generations, only recently sheltering in Jerusalem because of the Babylonian invasion (35:6-11). Jeremiah then delivered the point of the test as God's word to Judah: "the sons of Jonadab... have observed the command of their father... but this people has not listened to Me" (35:14-16). Because of their obedience, the LORD promised Jonadab's descendants would never lack a man to stand before Him (35:19). Jaazaniah's family thus became a living object lesson -- ordinary, generations-long faithfulness to a human command standing in sharp, deliberate contrast to Judah's persistent refusal to obey the living God who kept sending them prophets.
