Deborah served as Rebekah's nurse from Rebekah's youth in Paddan-aram, evidently accompanying her on the journey to marry Isaac (implied by Genesis 24:59, where an unnamed nurse departs with Rebekah, generally identified with this same Deborah). She remained connected to the family for decades afterward, appearing again late in Jacob's life traveling with his household as they journeyed back toward Bethel. Genesis records her death simply and briefly: "Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named Allon-bacuth" (Genesis 35:8, NASB) -- a name meaning "oak of weeping." No words of Deborah's are recorded, and no specific deed beyond her decades of faithful presence in the family. Yet the family's grief was significant enough that the place of her burial was given a lasting, named memorial, an honor otherwise rare for a household servant in the biblical text. Her brief notice is a quiet reminder that Scripture takes note of long, faithful, largely unheralded service -- a life spent caring for others that is worth mourning and remembering, even when it produces no headline-making episode of its own.
