Dan was Jacob's fifth son, born to Bilhah, the maidservant Rachel had given to Jacob so that she might "obtain children" through her, since Rachel herself remained barren while her sister Leah bore sons freely (Genesis 30:1-3). When Bilhah's son was born, Rachel declared, "God has vindicated me, and has indeed heard my voice and has given me a son." Therefore she named him Dan" -- a name built on the Hebrew word for judging or vindicating (30:6). Dan is listed among the twelve sons who traveled to Egypt with Jacob (46:23) and among the tribal heads counted and positioned throughout Israel's wilderness years (Numbers 1-2). On his deathbed, Jacob gave Dan a distinct, somewhat ominous blessing: "Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent in the way, a horned snake in the path, that bites the horse's heels so that his rider falls backward" (Genesis 49:16-17) -- language suggesting cunning, ambush-style strength rather than open, conventional warfare. Scripture records no personal deeds or words of Dan himself beyond his birth and this blessing; his individual story is brief, but his name became permanent as one of the twelve tribes of Israel, later allotted territory in Canaan (Joshua 19:40-48) before much of the tribe migrated north (Judges 18).
